It's really weird that you should mention Jim Woodring because until about a week ago i hadn't heard of him and then a friend of mine was over and he asked me the exact same question! All this suggests that i probably should be a fan but his website is bonkers and i've struggled to have a proper look so far. Any recommendations?

It's a bit expensive but the complete 'Frank' book - I can't recommend that highly enough. It is amazing.
